The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona got off the mark in 1963, at a time when in Daytona, Florida annual races started, gathering thousands of fans from around the world. The sports watch model with a durable steel case was designed deliberately for racers on the most popular highway and became extremely popular. The watch has its unusual name "cosmograph" due to one more passion of those years, flights and universe exploration topic – a new word is derived from "space" and "chronograph", which implies a new concept in the world of watchmaking and literally sounds as "a cosmic level chronograph." The accessory became dramatically different from the accepted norms because of its daring and now such a recognizable design. Designing of the sport "cosmograph" was built on the counterpoint concept – the chronograph counters stood out sharply against the background of the dial. They were either black on a light background or vice versa light on a black background, which was an absolute novelty at that time.

Today, more than half a century later, the company has released a model of Daytona in gold with an innovative black elastomer bracelet. The dial of the updated Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona version is successfully combined with the patented Cerachrom bezel from extra-durable black ceramic, which is resistant to corrosion and scratches. The bezel marking is created by cavities filling with a thin layer of platinum and gold using the PVD technology. An engraved tachymetric scale for calculating an average speed in miles or kilometers per hour is the key addition to the bezel. The oscillator, the watch heart is equipped with a Parachrom balance spring, which can withstand even the most difficult challenges in the form of magnetic fields, shock and temperature fluctuations. On the crown there is a special protective device, and the crown itself is added by a triple air-tightness system Triplock. The model has passed Rolex own certification, which is superior to the claims of a similar COSC Institute testing complex, and regarding the test results has received the chronometer status.
