The classical watch of the last decade gets a nice upgrade in a form of a clever and extremely stylish date indication on the outer ring.
A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date
If you’re into watches, you’d surely heard of Zeitwerk by A. Lange & Söhne. Since the introduction 10 years ago, the watch really stand apart in the Lange catalogue, thanks to two windows at ‘3’ and ‘9’ displaying the jumping hours and minutes. Within a fraction of a second, the mechanism advances the numeral discs, even when we’re talking the simultaneous jump of all three discs at the end of the hour. The small seconds positioned at ‘6’ and the power reserve occupying the top sector add to the overall symmetry. How can you add a date without ruining the aesthetics? The answer is very Lange – the ring-shaped indication.
A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date
The Zeitwerk Date comes in a 44.2-millimeter white-gold case with a grey dial. The circumferential date ring consists of glass with printed numerals from 1 to 31. The current date is displayed in red. To achieve this effect, a small colour segment beneath the date ring performs one step exactly at midnight. So in the course of a month, it moves around the dial by one full revolution. The date display can be adjusted with the corrector at 8 o’clock. An additional pusher at 4 o’clock is used to separately advance the hour indication, thus solving a problem that originated in the date display in the first place. Since it calls for a time setting that is accurate to 24 hours, it would take too long to adjust the time via the crown – minute by minute. To enable the correction independently of the switching cycles of the movement, a clutch uncouples the hour ring from the jumping numerals mechanism each time the button is pressed.
Manually wound caliber L043.8 of A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date
As you’d expect from A. Lange & Söhne, the finishing of the 516-part manually wound L043.8 movement is second to none. And of course, a hefty part of this beauty including the engraved ratchet wheel and the remontoir bridge are visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.
